Organizing And Storing My Spices

I found these little glass containers at a garage sale about a year ago for a couple of bucks.  I pictured them organized, labeled, full of different spices in beautiful earthy colors, all lined up along the top of my stove.  They HAVE been lined up along the top of my stove, but sitting empty, collecting dust, and looking sad.

The last 2 days were spent spring cleaning my kitchen.  IT IS SO CLEAN and I AM SO HAPPY!  My mother- in- law helped  finish it up, for which I was so grateful-- I'll have before and after pics coming up soon.  You would not believe the difference in my floor tile grout...I think I forgot the grout is supposed to be cream, because its been closer to mocha (can you tell I'm trying to make the color of dirt sound a bit more appealing??:))  Because I was spring cleaning, I knew I had to tackle my spices, and I'm very happy with how they turned out.  I put the spices that I use most often in the jars, the rest of my spices I have on a small, double- decker lazy susan in the cupboard right next to the stove.

I have said this before in another post, but if you can find a store that have bulk bins full of spices, (where you can help yourself to whatever amount you need, and are charged by weight), then by all means DO IT!  Most health food stores have this option. I can't tell you what a difference using fresh spices has make in my cooking and baking.  It is very economical, and I can buy smaller amounts of  spices that I do not use very often, so they won't sit around forever, getting stale.

I don't know about you, but having a clean kitchen and organized spices makes me wanna bake, so I'm off to search my recipes to see what I can make!

Just A Quick Hi!

Its been a full but fun day. No time to put together a decent post, (I'm lucky enough to have a handsome man wanting to spend time with ME!) but thought I would say a quick hi!

I am sitting here on a sugar high thanks to Barnes and Nobels' "Lemon Baby Bundt Cake"...oooohhh baby, it is goooood!  That + Vanilla Frapp= me feeling buzzy and a bit sick...but a good sick:)  While I was there, a super fun thing happened.  I met a reader!  My friend Jami was there with a friend and introduced us, and come to find out she is someone who reads and has commented on this lil' blog of mine.  How fun!  (Hi Amy, so nice to meet you in person!)  Great name, huh?

Other randomness on my brain:

~I'm worried about my garden.  The wind was CRAZY today.  I think my little carrot tops might have been blow to death.  I covered them as best as I could...we'll see how they are in the morning.

~I spent some time with my sister tonight.  Love her.  I gave her this rockin' haircut, (it's asymmetric, wish you could see the other side, but  I didn't know how public she would want her face, so I gave you half her face:), and my lil' one was cuddled up on the other side of her face, whose face I don't want public..confused yet?) then we went shoe shopping.  I was talking to her about this blog tonight, and she doesn't read it very often. (whatever...j/k) We laugh because our lives are so different.  Here is my interpretation of our differences...She is young, cool, has a great job and a busy social life...no kids.  I am old, getting a bit dweeby, and I'm into gardening, homemaking, cooking, crafting...and have kids everywhere I look.  I totally see why she doesn't read it that often, but I have to give her a hard time about it.  In fact, tomorrow (and the next day, and the next, and the next) she will wake up to a blog post from me, sitting in her email inbox, because right after I publish this, I am going on over to my sidebar and entering her email address into the little box that says "subscribe via email."  Bwaahaa, now she'll have to read it...I love sisters!!

~I am so spring cleaned out!  I have only done my sunroom, living room, dining room and I am 1/2 way through with the kitchen.  Blech.  Tomorrow, my mother- in- law, Sharon, is taking me out to breakfast, then coming back here to tackle the rest of the kitchen with me:)  How awesome is that??

~I am determined to make May Day baskets this year.  I have a plan, and I hope they turn out as cute as they look in my head!!

~Teacher appreciation day is coming up.  I wanna do a lil' something.  Hmm...what to do?

~I've been thinking about different little fears I have hanging around lately.  Why do I let them?  Love this verse-- 2 Timothy 1:7 "God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love, and of power and of a sound mind"  Amen!

~Back to that husband of mine, who is waiting so patiently.  He has been working on a whole behavior/reward/allowance system that we will be trying out on our kids starting May 1st.  It is very exciting.  If it works well (most things do that come from his strategic mind) I will blog about it!

Goodnight, blessings to you all!

Anti-Procrastination Tuesdays #8

***Please Read Before Linking

When I first started "Anti-Procrastination Tuesdays," the vision was a weekly THEMED link party, one that focused in on what it is we tend to procrastinate on and the motivation to do something about that. I envisioned women visiting each others blogs and writing comments of encouragement, and being inspired as we watched each other accomplish whatever it was that we had been putting off.
This is happening on a small scale, and it has been beautiful!
I have noticed the last few weeks there have been a lot more crafty/project type posts, which fits in a way, because something got done. It has been exciting to see the numbers grow each week, but it has got me thinking about just what kind of link up party do we want this to be? Do we want it to be strictly "procrastination" themed, or are you enjoying the flexibility of "anything goes" and the participants/traffic that brings? I communicated that I was flexible in what "getting something done" was, so it was only natural that there would be a variety of link ups. My fear in this is that we will lose the uniqueness of the "Anti-Procrastination theme.
Donna @ Funky Junk has been asking all type of link party questions, and the answers have been fascinating. Her solution to a problem similar to this was to have 2 separate linky themes on the same link page/party. I am going to try the same. That way we can keep the traffic going, but still keep the uniqueness of the procrastination theme. I think it will be easier for those who come for specific reasons to find exactly what they are looking for.
The first one will be "Anti-Procrastination" Themed:
~things you've wanted to do for a long time
~before & afters
The second one will be much more flexible:
~recipes
~crafts
~projects
Please give me your thoughts on this. I will be featuring posts from both camps, but I will be honest and tell you I will tend to lean toward featuring more of the procrastination themed posts, just because that is where the vision was from the start, which is my heart:) Does this all make sense? I will try it out this week and see how it goes. Again, your thoughts matter!

Spring Cleaning #2-Sunroom

Spring cleaning--its a love hate thing for me.  Don't like doing it, but LOVE the results.  So far, I have finished my Living Room and my Sunroom.  The Living Room took me 4 hours (one hour of that was fixing my vacuum, grr) and the Sunroom took about 2 1/2.  Not a fast process.  2 rooms down, 10 to go!!

I bought the ebook, "Spring Cleaning For Normal People" at Simple Mom, for $7.00.  One tip in the book that has been super helpful is her suggestion of taking everything out of the room (not heavy furniture), and putting it in a central location before you start cleaning.  Not only does this get it all out of the way for deep cleaning, but as you put each piece back, you have a minute to think about whether it is something that is useful or beautiful, and if you want to keep it or not.   Thanks to this tip, I have eliminated a ton of stuff!  It also gives you a chance to focus in on each object to deep clean it, too, before putting it back in its place.
{great tip-- pile stuff in a central location}
{eww.  nasty, dirty window sill}
{this window marker has been there since my husbands birthday...his birthday was in February!}

This is how I cleaned my sunroom:
~piled everything in the center
~used broom to reach high for cobwebs in corners and windows
~used broom to brush off loose dirt on window sills
~filled bucket with water/vinegar (1/2 & 1/2)
~wiped down doors
~wiped down window sills/frames
~wiped down all walls
~wiped down floor trim
~used a Mr. Clean eraser to get rid of scuff marks on doors and trim
~cleaned windows inside
~cleaned windows outside
~got frustrated because I couldn't reach 3 windows on the outside without a ladder
~marveled at how bright the room looked with clean windows
~put back decor that didn't touch the floor, cleaning them and eliminating as I went
~moved objects that did touch the floor from the middle of the room so I could...
~...sweep!
~mopped (twice...it was nasty)
~sat in the swing, sighed and smiled

{ahhh, much better!}

{what my kids like to do in the sunroom}

{my youngest walked in and said, "Wow, mom, you painted??":}
This is the type of hook I used to hang the scooters.  2 per scooter.  The ones I used are rubber coated and white.  They have worked well.

Square Foot Gardening-Update

I am continuing to love the idea of Square Foot Gardening and I THINK IT IS WORKING!  So far, I have planted some cool weather crops.  Its funny--before reading the book, I didn't know there were cool weather and warm weather plants--I had a lot to learn!!  I planted spinach, carrots and radishes from seed.  Onions were sets, and I bought transplants for lettuce and red swiss chard.  Everything seems to be coming along just fine.   I'm a bit worried about the carrots, they just look so fragile!  I bought seeds for short, baby carrots.  I probably won't plant carrots again, they are just so reasonably priced at the store, and they take up 2 squares, which will only produce 32 carrots.  I know my girls will have them eaten in a week, so it doesn't seem worth it.
As you can see in the picture, I built a cage to keep out bunnies, squirrels and birds.  It has worked beautifully (see Square Foot Gardening book for directions). When I first planted seeds, I covered the cage in plastic using wooden clips to keep it in place.  It created a wonderful environment for the seeds to keep moist, warm, and safe from wind and hard rain.  It was not much fun to build... chicken wire is not my best friend, I needed a manicure after working with it!  I have to build one more cage for my second bed so I can get some warmer weather crops going.  I will also have to build some type of support for vining plants, like cucumbers and squash.
swiss chard
I have really liked the soil mix I am using.  It is called "Mel's Mix" from Square Foot Gardening.  It is amazing how long it stays moist, and the texture is just perfect. It is 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 compost.  He gives details about the mix in the book, it is a little pricey up front, but each year you just have to add a bit more compost to your beds, so it is a one time expense.  I will be mixing up another 1/2 batch for my tomato, pepper and green bean pots.
I have tomato plants and pepper plants happy in my sunroom, ready to be planted out in pots, in a week or so. My little sugar snap pea seeds sprouted, they look so cute raising their little heads to the sky!  I also started some lettuce mix and basil transplants, and both have sprouted and are looking good. I bought herbs and will show you my herb pot soon, and write a post on our little strawberry patch. Whew.

So far, so good!!
Any comments, thoughts or advice is appreciated!

Me-Exposed.

I am reading a book on Identity.
God and I have been working hard together, as He shows me who I REALLY am.
When all the fronts are stripped away, what is left?
The core of who I am.

It is so important for me to embrace fully who God says I am.  In order to do this, it takes a stripping away of old beliefs, a painful but beautiful process.  This is where the work comes in.

It is so worth it, this hard work of exposing the core, of getting real.  You see, I have 3 precious little motivators.  3 little girls who deserve a mom who can show them the beauty of their Savior.  This is my life's work.

I am not alone in this work:
~I have God, who is enough, yet in His goodness He has provided so much more for me:
~I have a wise man sent from God, it is his profession to give words of wisdom, he accepts money but his words are priceless.
~I have a husband, who has a million times over shown me true love, reflecting The Answer in so many ways.
 ~I have multiple women in my life, they speak life into me, allow me to see their cores, and teach me as He transforms them.
~I have a virtual world that is real, words of truth come through with a click of a button, so many tidbit treasures.
~I have so much to be grateful for, I am overwhelmed.

I wanted to share a written example of the work I am doing.
It about me, as a six year old girl.
It was a fleeting moment in time, but its residue has lasted.
I was being disobedient, sneaking to a house 2 blocks down, "just for a few minutes, mom will never know," and she didn't, until now.
I wanted to see where my new little friend lived, what the insides of her home looked like.
She lived there alone with her dad, who was not home.
Oh how I now hurt for that little girl friend, living alone with a lost, twisted man.
A man who left violent, gruesome, worse than you can imagine, twisted, bloody, horrendous pornography out in the open
I experienced 3 minutes of hell in her home...she lived in it. I never went back there again.  I don't remember playing with her again. I don't remember her name, but God does. May He bless her wherever she is.

~~~
Beginnings Of Core Exposure
It takes such a brave soul to explore the core.
Blinders off, zeroed in, honest, real and true.
Paralyzing fear, such a scary place to go, yet I do.
I feel shame, exposed.
The enemies traps are everywhere, yet little girl innocence is unaware, vulnerable to his snares.
He preys the young, creating fear, triggering premature interest.
He smirks in satisfaction at her confusion.
A six year old-in the wrong place and time.
A trap set, sitting nonchalantly on a countertop, atop a pile of mail.
Trap lures, little fingers open, caught.
Eyes see, heart freezes, puzzled panic sets in.
Hands slam shut, eyes want to, mind does but too late.
Violent, evil, gruesome images, branded into a brain too small to fit them in,
Little legs skip away, time to play.  Smile pasted, mind shuts down.
God in His goodness creates this intricate mind,
One that when circuits are overwhelmed, trips to self protect.
It stays tripped for lengths of time, until the enemy comes by
With an accusing finger, he pushes reset.
His lips full of lies, I believe as truth
Evil "repairs" damage even more.
Through the years, I am convinced fixed, but still broken.
Satan smiles at his crafty plans and makes more of them.
God's heart breaks.  But...
He knows the Ultimate plan, beginning and end.
He has a plan on His Holy Heart, a plan just for ME:
~a plan to work it all out for good
~a plan with a guarantee to make all things new
~a plan that promises to overcome the evil one
~a plan that heals and restores
~a plan that has purpose
~a plan that turns pain to beauty
~a plan to reveal, redemption real
~a plan that will open eyes shut tight
~a plan that will come about, in His time
That time is now.
Plans fulfilled twenty-eight years later,
As the faithful fixer helps the little one restore the core.
Little girl scared, yet ready, He gently probes.
Holy hands hold hers
He moves to push reset, she wants to flee,
But then remembers whose hole- pierced hand it is.
Tears fall.  She speaks words aloud, images unimaginable.
The circuit shorts, breaks.  Beautiful brokenness.
Shattered, yet the core remains.
Exposed, real, true, free.
Reset, remade, renewed
Eyes reopened they see purity
She smiles relief, safe and eager for more plans of His to come.
Little girl, now with 3 of her own,
(3 little ones who make core exposure necessary)
Is being made NEW.
French Lentil Soup
photo by photobunny
I make homemade soup for my husband every week.  He takes a mason jar off to work each day, filled with a healthful portion of vegetable goodness.  He would be happy eating the same soup, everyday, every week-- but that is WAY too boring for me.  I love finding new easy, healthy soup recipes, and this one from Zakka Life caught my eye as just that!  I made it, and it is a keeper, one I will make often!
Lentils are a super food.  They are inexpensive and high in protein, iron, calcium, and fiber.
The fiber in lentils helps lower cholesterol levels.  They are also beneficial in managing blood sugar because it is a low glycemic food.  The great mix of fiber and protein will fill you up and keep you full, even an hour later.
French Lentil Soup
3 tbls olive oil
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1 cup chopped celery (I used 1/2 cup)
1 cup chopped carrots
3 garlic cloves, minced
4-5 cups chicken stock (homemade makes a world of difference!) or vegetable stock
11/4 cups dried lentils, rinsed and drained
14 oz can diced tomatoes plus juice
3 tbls balsamic vinegar
salt & pepper to taste
(I also added a bit of thyme and rosemary, about 1/2 tsp thyme and 1/4 tsp rosemary)
1. In a large pot, saute onions, garlic, carrots and celery in olive oil for about 10-15 minutes.
2. Add lentils, chicken stock and diced tomatoes.  Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 35 minutes.
3. When lentils are tender, add balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to taste.  Enjoy!
Anti-Procrastination Tuesdays #7
I was getting worried that it would be another week where nothing got crossed off the Doozy list.  I checked out the list, and was pleasantly surprised that I would be able to cross off a couple, and I'm in the process of finishing a few more!
Here is what I got done:
~Discuss Allowance With Todd
I am excited to share with you what we came up with in a future post. We went out on a date Saturday night and spent our whole dinner coming up with a plan.  In a nutshell, our children will be able to earn allowance through good behavior, and completed chores/ routines.  Our plans include little jars that they will fill with rocks which they will have to earn, and each filled jar will receive payment.  The plan will start in the month of May, so that is when you can expect a more detailed post on our system.
~Sort My Clothes
This included cleaning my closet, and I am SO bummed I didn't get pics for you.  It would have been a great before and after:)
~Read A Book A Month
Been visiting the library.  Right now I am reading "20 And Counting" by Michelle and Jim Bob Dugger.  I am just fascinated by how they are able to do life so well.  I have to admit, reading this book is convicting...it is AMAZING how they are able to turn every experience into a teaching lesson for their kids.  That would take such extreme patience! {sigh}
~Go Through Family Wardrobe.
I think we have too many clothes.  Now that winter clothes are packed away, I am getting rid of clothes that we don't love or need.
Enough of me, on to You!  There were so many super creative projects linked up last week!  Below are some of my favorites.  I love the creative projects,  (keep 'em coming!), but I also love to hear and feature procrastination stories, or see lists of what you would like to get done.  Looking forward to seeing what you all have for me this week!!
Spring Cleaning #1
Well, I have given up the idea of someone else spring cleaning my home, (I offered on facebook to trade hair/nail/waxing services in exchange for a spring clean, and it was met with little interest-I guess no one else wants to spring clean, either!!:))  Kathy, my mother-in-law, encouraged me to do a little at a time and enjoy the good feeling it will bring as I get it done.  I like that advice and I'm going to take it!  For some reason when it comes to spring cleaning, I want it all done at once, which paralyzes me!!  I have a pretty clear calendar this week, so I will do a bit at a time and let you know how it goes!
I found this awesome ebook "Spring Cleaning for Normal People" at Simple Mom, and bought it for $7.00.  It was worth every penny!  She has a way of breaking spring cleaning down into manageable steps, and gives great tips which makes it much less overwhelming.  Last week she had a spring cleaning series on her blog that was very inspirational, you can click here to check it out.
1st Step: Decluttering
From Tsh @ Simple Mom:
Does every item in your home make your family happy?  Does the item add to your home, your life, your family?  Of if you were truly honest, would you say it's more of a burden?
If it's a burden in any way, get rid of it.  It's not worth the valuable real estate between your four walls.
"Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."-19th century architect William Morris
This is what I will do today. I will start this spring cleaning week by going from room to room and getting rid of anything that does not fit in the above quote. (and sneaking it to the Goodwill before my girls get home!!:))
I plan on using my mornings this week to spring clean, then in the afternoons, do something I enjoy (gardening, cooking, reading). If I set aside a full days to clean, I will get bored, burn out, and give up.  I can handle the mornings knowing I will get to do something more enjoyable in the afternoon!  Here goes..wish me luck!
*do you spring clean each year?  is motivation as hard for you as it is for me?  do you have a system?  got any tips for me??
